KRON4’s Ali Reid covers Alive & Free’s 30th Anniversary Gala

Alumni and supporters of Alive & Free celebrated 30 years of transforming lives of young people at The Bently Reserve in San Francisco last Thursday, November 16, 2017.

Daija Foster flew in from Washington D.C. to share her story with over 300 guests.

“They helped me deal with my anger, fear, and pain which is something that I struggled with for years. Instead of going to see a therapist, coming to Omega was therapeutic.”  Daija is a 2013 graduate of Spelman College in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience and is currently working on her doctorate.

ABC News highlights San Francisco School Board President Shamann Walton

Shamann Walton joined Alive & Free Omega Boys Club in 1993 with a tainted past.  He had been in juvenile hall and had been expelled from numerous school districts.  “For me, with the Omega Boys Club, I would say I might not be a free man today, and I may not be alive.” He completed the program and graduated from Morris Brown College. Today, Shamann is the President of the San Francisco Board of Education and is a shining example of what can happen when we positively support our youth.

You can learn more about Shamann Walton as he ambitiously runs for San Francisco District 10 Supervisor!

6 Days Until #GivingTuesday

Next week, communities around the world come together to give on #GivingTuesday!

#GivingTuesday was founded immediately following Black Friday and Cyber Monday – two days that are focused on consumption and spending.

While #GivingTuesday reminds us about the importance of giving, we also have Thanksgiving, a holiday that allows us to reflect and share what we are grateful for.

We want to let YOU – our amazing community – know how grateful we are for all that you do to keep our young people Alive & Free… And Educated!

In finding the answer to this question, young readers will see themselves in Rodney, especially for children who are curious to explore in nature, beyond a structured classroom. Carmen is hopeful that parents and caregivers come as she will emphasize literacy and books in the home, as well as how we need to care for nature and parks for future generations. Carmen will read and lead the children in an art project related to the book.

WHO:  DCYF
WHAT:  2017 San Francisco Summer Resource Fair
WHERE: County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, 1199 9th Ave., SF
WHEN:   Saturday, March 11 from 10am to 2pm
CONTACT: Emily Davis: 415.554.8991 or Emily.Davis@dcyf.org.
NOTES: Summer is a time to explore new ideas, learn new skills, make new friends, take risks, see new places, and have fun. Summer can also be a stressful time for working families, who need to be sure that their children are safe, healthy, and learning during the months school is not in session. Fortunately, there are many wonderful summer programs, classes, camps, and other opportunities for children and youth in San Francisco, and the annual Summer Resource Fair is the best place to find out about them! The 2017 Summer Resource Fair is free to attend, and will feature 200 exhibitors from organizations that offer summer programs, classes, camps, and other services for children and youth ages 0-24. The Fair is also a lot of fun: many of the exhibitors will host activities at their tables, the SF Rec & Park Department will host a range of sports, arts & crafts, and other play stations, the SF Public Library will give away books, and Play-Well TEKnologies will work with attendees to build a model of the city of San Francisco out of LEGOs!

WHO: DCYF’s Oversight and Advisory Committee (OAC)
WHAT: Presentation of the first draft of the Services Allocation Plan (SAP)
WHERE: 101 Grove Street, 3rd Floor, Main Conference Room
WHEN: Monday, March 13th 5:30pm
CONTACT: For more information: www.dcyf.org or call 415-554-8991
NOTES: At the March meeting of the Oversight & Advisory Committee, DCYF will present the first draft of our Services Allocation Plan (SAP). The SAP will guide DCYF’s strategies over the next five years, and will be used to craft our major Request for Proposals. The meeting is open to the public.

NOTES: Youth Advocacy Day is a historic day of civic engagement for San Francisco’s youth. Held each spring, Youth Advocacy Day brings 200 high school students into City Hall to speak directly to city leaders and elected public officials. Citywide youth activism and advocacy are showcased during YAD through presentations and a Community Resource Fair. Since 2010, YAD has brought over 600 youth into San Francisco’s city government. YEF’s Youth Advocacy Day is led in collaboration with the Department of Children Youth and their Families. See more about Youth Advocacy Day HERE
