After a first mural in Les Bosquets, a neighborhood near Paris where he has worked for many years, JR has chosen San Francisco, a city very rich in contrasts, whose recent history could be told in a powerful way through a mural. Since the visit of Diego Rivera in 1931, San Francisco has a long muralist tradition. The city features immense innovation and wealth as well as one of the highest rates of child homelessness in the country. In San Francisco, JR will create both a still and a moving mural, capturing the nuances of the city at this moment in time, in a unique way.

Community Alert: Don’t Forget – Mardi Gras San Francisco Style, Masquerade Ball

Mardi Gras San Francisco Style

Masquerade Ball with Alabama Mike &

Fillmore Slim

February 13, 2018

1

The Village Project will present its 12th annual Mardi Gras San Francisco Style on February 13th.   This Fat Tuesday celebration includes a free blues concert from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, featuring the Silver Fox Blues Band, with a special appearance by Fillmore Slim.  The blues concert will take place on the Fillmore Center Plaza @ Fillmore & O’Farrell.  It will end at 7 pm, followed by A festive New Orleans style processional which will be led by the St. Gabriel Brass Band and SambaFunk!  The processional will start at Golden Gate & Fillmore and march along the sidewalks of the Fillmore Corridor, ending at Geary Blvd.

Mardi Gras San Francisco Style will again bring San Francisco’s historic Fillmore Music District to life with rhythm & blues, a colorful family friendly carnival atmosphere, along with face painting, street artists and performers.

Guests will be able to enjoy food, drink and other specials at numerous Fillmore restaurants, clubs and businesses. A plethora of eclectic delectable eats will be available to satisfy every palate.  We are expecting visitors from the Fillmore District and beyond,” states Adrian Williams, Executive Director of The Village Project and producer of the event. “Not only does our annual Mardi Gras celebration include what people look for in the traditional New Orleans celebrations, it continues to embrace the rich history of this neighborhood — where music has been intertwined into the fabric of everyday life for more than 100 years in one of the most historical neighborhoods in San Francisco”.

Following the outdoor festivities, the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball will take place at the West Bay Conference Center, 1290 Fillmore at 8 pm. The crown jewel of San Francisco’s Fat Tuesday celebration will feature Alabama Mike & Band, along with Fillmore Slim, while guests enjoy an evening of New Orleans style food prepared by Nia Soul, dancing to Zydeco and soul train tunes and plenty of partying.

Advance tickets for the Masquerade Ball are available at www.eventbrite.com. Ticket price include admission to the ball, dinner, beads, and a beverage.
